These are some of the skirt lifters I have in my collection. Skirt lifters were used by the women tennis players to lift their skirts somewhat so they would not drag on the courts. They were also utilized to lift the long skirts so they would not drag on the dirty streets, while playing croquet, and bicycle riding. Also displayed in the old spool cabinet are other tennis items.
Shown here are some of the spoons with tennis racquets or tennis figures made on them. Also shown are some tennis napkin rings. At the top are two old boots to be worn by horses when they mowed or worked on tennis or golf courses so they would not damage the sod.
Old stereoviews to be viewed in stereoviewer as 3-D. All of them have tennis racquets and/or tennis courts shown on them. The center letter was written by the great tennis player Bill Tilden. To the left is an old tennis catalog.
Trophies and miscellaneous items. Special note: the stein that is second from the right in the front row is an 1862 Fives (another forerunner of lawn tennis) award. Also note unique shape of 1890's fish shell type of trophy on the right front. Most of the other items are 1880's to early 1900's. The old candy dish in front has been recoppered.
